Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has multiple, disparate transit data systems such as a train control system, scheduling system, asset management system, and others, all of which contain a wealth of data.
Open Data Portal and Dashboard
Internal teams were manually gathering data from multiple systems, to prepare operational and performance dashboards, and share data with riders. The goal of this project was to centralize data, automate the dashboard for public use, and publish data and APIs for data developers to leverage for 3rd party projects and applications. TransSIGHT’s role was as the implementer and maintainer of the dashboard, portal, and hosted system.
Key Challenges
Disseminating data that can be published: BART has over terabyte of data collected from over a dozen operational, project, and financial systems some of which is data that had not been available publicly prior to this project. The challenge was to get stakeholders comfortable with this data being available to the public. TransSIGHT worked closely with the data leads to identify the data scope and customize the data representation to get their buy-in.
Continuous data feed: In every data project it is critical to provide data feeds that regularly publish new data. The TransSIGHT team developed a communications plan to assure the data feeds are regularly updated.
The BART Open Data portal and Dashboard were built using TransSIGHT Share, our data management platform and open data portal solution.
