Each agency needed a business intelligence and reporting solution to better understand their ridership, maintenance costs, revenue, and key KPIs such as on-time performance, revenue miles, and customer service metrics.
TransSIGHT deployed its standard business intelligence platform, TransSIGHT View, comprised of a data lake, data source connectors, and best-in-class front end, provided by Tableau to fulfill Samtrans and Caltrain’s reporting and business intelligence needs. Due to the flexible nature of our architecture, additional data sources can easily be added as they become available. TransSIGHT connected over 22 data sources to drive the dashboards created for Samtrans. In addition to these configured dashboards, the platform allows users to create custom reports, drill down into the data behind those reports, and download data sets for use in other systems.
Key Challenges
Access to all data: Samtrans and TransSIGHT worked very closely with all system and solution vendors to get access to the data from their systems: this took multiple steps and more time than originally anticipated. Several vendors were challenging to work with, Samtrans ultimately escalated to upper management to get a resolution.
Impact of COVID 19: During the early portion of the COVID-19 pandemic, as Samtrans staff were settling into their remote work routine, coordination of work took longer than expected. In order to stay on track, the project team re-prioritized the tasks in order to reduce the impact of these delays.
